Designed from the ground up, a living roof replaces the traditional shingle roof and transforms the space into a living, breathing, functioning extension of the landscape. The features of a green roof include a higher thermal rating, unique aesthetics, and promotes native plant species for birds, bees and butterflies!
The design of the green roof adds additional stress and weight onto the structure. It is typically designed with the green roof before construction, retrofit is usually not possible.
The foundation for the structure has to account for the additional weight of the roof material. A strong foundation is important to the long term success of the roof.
The structure itself needs to account for the stresses of the additional load for the roof material. Extra supports and thicker material is used.
3/4" tongue and groove plywood is used for the roof, as well as hurricane ties and extra reinforcement. This material is significantly stronger than the traditional roofing material and ensures longevity for years to come.
The 3/4" tongue and groove plywood is then coated with a special adhesive to help adhere the blueskin waterproof membrane to the roof structure. This ensures the wood is completely protected from any moisture.
Sitting on top of the blueskin membrane is the drainage layer. Similar to your basement waterproofing, this layer has a dimple board underlayer with a fabric layer on top, perfect for soil substrate. Completely secured from only the perimeter ensuring no water penetration within.
The soil medium is a combination of ultra-light, high nutrient, extra porous soil meant specifically for the green roof application.
Planted with a combination of native wildflowers, sedums and other local seed mixes, the green roof will help promote the local birds, bees and butterflies!
